I just bought an Alienware computer. Every night I turn the computer off and every night at midnight, the computer turns itself back on. Windows 7 was set up for me at the factory and I've not changed any settings. Other than unplugging my computer every night, how do I fix this? This thread is locked. After trying the setup successfully, my pc keeps turning on by itself when I shut it down. I have dual boot with Windows 10 and Elementary OS, and the behaviour is exactly the same independently of the OS where I power off from.
The strangest thing is that the computer will power on by itself even with the ethernet cable disconnected. I really don't know what is going on. If I deactivate WOL in the BIOS, everything goes back to normal, but with this setting activated, the pc will keep turning on a few seconds after the shutdown not sleep , even without being connected to the ethernet cable.

This has never had such an issue. Hi Jasongalley First things first Here is what you need to understand to know what is wrong Capacitor are meant to store charge but when compromised they tend to drain out all of it hence it takes time to charge it up again.
Also, I spent so much time playing with different Linux distros before deciding to go back to Windows 7 that I missed the Windows 10 free upgrade deadline. Can't really justify the upgrade cost if I don't have to.
I was definitely confused by the OS remark as well, but faulting capacitors definitely would make sense. Thank for the input everyone. Get everything you need off the ssd and invest in another laptop. Unfortunately all the major repairs come after the warranty expiration date Probably MOBO.. As tomkyalo said, sounds like a mainboard capacitor issue.
One thing to check and see if it behaves differently:. Make sure the battery is charged and shut down Windows, take the battery out, hold down the power button for a full 30 seconds, put battery back in and power on normally without the charger connected.
That was actually the first thing I tried when it stopped turning on immediately. I've made the decision to get rid of it Here's to hoping I can pull in some money for parts or something on eBay so I can swing a new laptop.
If it boots, you have verified your RAM to a further extent, as well as your processor. Access your windows files from within Parted Magic, Very easy --click on the desktop icon "File Manager" that is automatically on the desktop on boot You may have to mount your HD first.
Parted magic loads all files into RAM so once its booted, you can copy, paste, and even remove the flash drive and your system will be fine. If you complete steps you have verified all hardware good enough, and your problem is software with the windows OS. But now that you have your data, feel free to try to repair your OS by hitting F8 and boot into safe mode, or blow away the OS and re-image from scratch. If you cant complete these steps, then the hardware that was "supposed" to be verified by completing that step Download Parted Magic from Major Geeks.
